How to Start Daf Yomi — Even Mid-Cycle
Want to start Daf Yomi but unsure how? Here's a practical, no-stress guide to joining the cycle today, picking a shiur, and building a sustainable daily habit.
The single biggest barrier to starting Daf Yomi isn't skill — it's the feeling that you've 'missed the boat'. You haven't. People join the cycle every single day. Here's a no-stress way to start, whether the world is in Berachos or Niddah.
Step 1 — Just start. Don't wait for a new masechta.
The classic advice is to wait for the start of a new tractate. That's a great idea if the new masechta is two weeks away. If it's six months away, don't wait. Start tonight, with whatever daf the world is on.
Daf Chazarah's homepage and /today page always show today's daf. Open one, read the summary, and you've already started.
Step 2 — Pick one shiur and stick with it.
There are excellent free Daf Yomi shiurim from Rabbi Eli Stefansky (MDY), OU Daf Yomi, All Daf (OU), Daf HaChaim, Hadran (women's shiur), Lakewood Daf Yomi and many others — in English, Hebrew, Yiddish and more.
Try two or three for a few days, pick the one whose pace and style fits you, and commit. Switching constantly is the fastest way to fall behind.
Step 3 — Build a chazarah habit immediately.
Listening to a shiur is half the work. Without a short review you'll forget most of it within days. Set a fixed time — first thing in the morning, on the train, before bed — to read the day's Daf Chazarah summary. Five minutes is enough.
Download the PDF on your phone or get the Daf Chazarah app (iOS, Android, Amazon) so the daily summary is always one tap away, even offline.
Step 4 — Track your streak, not your perfection.
You will miss days. Everyone does. The trick is to not let one missed day become two. Use the Daf Yomi calendar to see exactly which daf you're on, and just pick up from today — don't try to 'catch up' on the daf you missed. Catching up is the trap that ends most Daf Yomi attempts.
Step 5 — Find a chavrusa or community.
Daf Yomi is much easier when you're not alone. Join a local in-person shiur if you can, or the Daf Chazarah WhatsApp group of 250+ active learners — it's free and a great way to stay accountable.
Frequently asked
I've never learned Gemara before. Can I still do Daf Yomi?
Yes. Pick a shiur aimed at beginners (All Daf and Hadran are great starting points), accept that you won't understand everything in the first few weeks, and trust the process. By the end of a tractate you'll be amazed how much sticks.
How much time does Daf Yomi actually take per day?
A typical shiur is 45–60 minutes, plus 5–10 minutes for chazarah. So budget about an hour a day. Some days are shorter, some longer — but the average over a full cycle works out to roughly an hour daily.
